I’ve been obsessed with EDC for almost 10 years. After testing budget and mid-range minimalist wallets, I wanted to answer one question: Are premium leather wallets actually worth $90-130?
I tested 5 wallets over several weeks, including:
- Two from Bellroy (a brand known for quality)
- The Ekster leather version of their popular pop-up wallet
- A Secrid hybrid wallet
- My current daily carry, the Double Oak Cloud
Every wallet got the One Arm Test, because if I can’t access my card while holding a baby, it’s useless to me.

How They Compare
Build Quality
- Bellroy Note Wallet – Best overall construction. Quality leather, quality stitching, interior materials that make the slots function better. Pull tab works right out of the box.
- Double Oak Cloud – Premium leather, clean stitching, elegant magnetic closure. Fabric interior only shows when open. Three months in, barely any wear.
- Bellroy Folio Mini – Solid heavy-duty zip, quality leather, well-designed interior. The magnetic coin holder is a nice touch.
- Secrid Miniwallet – Looks and feels premium on the outside. Open it up and you’ll find a cheap plastic cash holder and rough leather cuts on the card slots. The pop-up mechanism is where the budget went.
- Ekster Leather – Stitching splitting out of the box at $129. The leather is nice, but quality control isn’t there. Unacceptable at this price.
Daily Carry
- Double Oak Cloud – Disappears in front pocket, stays slim even loaded. Magnets hold it closed securely. Barely notice it throughout the day.
- Secrid Miniwallet – Small footprint even fully loaded. Button buckle keeps everything secure. Easy to forget it’s there.
- Bellroy Note Wallet – A little bulky for front-pocket carry, doesn’t leave much room for other EDC items. Manageable, but noticeably larger than true minimalist options.
- Ekster Leather – The leather flap adds bulk and makes the wallet awkward to handle. Constantly feels like something’s in the way.
- Bellroy Folio Mini – Bulkiest of the bunch, but expected with a zipper wallet. Not uncomfortable, just not minimal.
One Arm Test
- Double Oak Cloud – All slots work one-handed. Outside slot is easy, inside slots need slightly more finesse but totally doable. This is what practical design looks like.
- Bellroy Note Wallet – Quick-access slots work great one-handed. Pull-tab is nearly impossible, so keep daily cards in the main slots.
- Secrid Miniwallet – Pop-up mechanism works easily with one finger. Opening the flap and accessing those cards? Awkward at best.
- Ekster Leather – Pop-up works, but the leather flap makes it hard to get a good grip. Flap card slots are very difficult one-handed.
- Bellroy Folio Mini – Zipper means not happening. I could use my teeth? Don’t recommend.
Best Value
- Double Oak Cloud ($89) – Best balance of price, quality, and function. Does everything well, nothing poorly.
- Secrid Miniwallet ($89) – Solid value if you primarily use the pop-up slot and ignore the cheap interior.
- Bellroy Note Wallet ($95) – Worth the extra $6 if you want a traditional bifold done right.
- Bellroy Folio Mini ($95) – Worth it if you need high capacity and don’t care about one-handed use.
- Ekster Leather ($129) – Not worth it at any price. Quality issues out of the box at the highest price point.

Skip This One: Ekster Leather – $129

What I Actually Carry
Double Oak Cloud Wallet. Three months in, still my daily driver.
It checks every box: lightweight, slim, passes the front pocket test, one-arm usable, holds all my cards, and looks sophisticated. The kind of wallet you’re proud to pull out.
